Taormina was founded in the IV century B.C. by the Siculi, on the slopes of the Tauro Mountain, from where its name comes ( Tauromenion ). The city was greek and then roman. It was byzantine capital of Sicily, destroyed by the Arabs, it was rebuilted and became an artistic and commercial centre.
