Worldwide touristic center, Taormina is known for its breathtaking views of the sea and Mount Etna, for its small and typical streets, and the temperated climat, all over the year. You can reach the city by plane, from Catania airport, then by bus, car, or train.
Taormina was founded in the IV century B.C. by the Siculi, on the slopes of the Tauro Mountain, from where its name comes ( Tauromenion ). The city was greek and then roman. It was byzantine capital of Sicily, destroyed by the Arabs, it was rebuilted and became an artistic and commercial centre.
The first place to visit is the greek theatre, one of the best view of Sicily. Every year, in summer, here many cultural and musical events are held, like the Taormina Film Festival, Taormina arte, with big artists, from all over the world. Along the main street, corso Umberto, visit S.Pancrazio church, the odeon, Piazza IX Aprile, the centre of the city, his ” belvedere”, the watch Tower, and the Duomo.
You can do your shopping, in many typical shops and buy handmade souvenirs. Taormina is also famous for a great choice of best sicilian food and wines. Every kind of excursion on the eastern coast of Sicily is not far from the city. The vulcano Etna, with its natural reserve, the Alcantara Gorges, that the river has excaved in the lava bed, Giardini Naxos, the beach of the “isola bella”, and the city of Catania, built in baroque style .
